As of today, I am 517 pages into the (peerless) Stephen King's second-most-recent novel. The book is 1,074 pages-long, so I am not quite half-way through, but I can already feel myself starting to worry about a time when there are too few pages left...
I guess that's how much I am enjoying to story thus far.
That is certainly not to say that this is my new favorite book - I wouldn't even call it my favorite Stephen King story - but it is quite outstanding, and reading it has been a real pleasure for me.
The story follows the happenings within and surrounding a small town in northern Maine called Chester's Mill, starting at the exact moment a giant dome-like structure has been cupped over it.
We don't know what the "dome" is. We don't know how, or why it's here.
Without giving away too much, I will tell you that, under the dome, Chester's Mill becomes its own world. In this world, extremes are redefined, and the idea of everyday life becomes a whole new thing.
According to the author's note, Under the Dome, which was published on November 10, 2009, is the finished product of an endeavor Stephen King started in the 1970's. And again in the 1980's. It wasn't until 2007 that King was able to face the project head-on, seeing it to its finish.
And it's a good thing he did, because this book is providing me with excellent summer reading =]
S P E A K I N G OF STEPHEN KING...
Did YOU know that there are a handful of his books published under the pseudonym, Richard Bachman?
Yeap.
On his website, King explains that the publishing industry's tradition of limiting authors to a single publication per-year simply made the fabrication of Richard Bachman a necessity for him in the late 70's and early 80's.
He produced no fewer than five Bachman-books, including Rage(1977) and The Running Man(1982).
And now you know. You're welcome =].
